The aim of research :

The aim of this research is to identifying the intensity of strategies use in learning listening, investigating the inter-correlation among the strategies deployment, and describing how significantly successful and less successful learners differ in the use of strategies.

The subject of research :

Two hundred and fifty seven students at seventh and eighth grade of junior high school in Malang.

The assesment data :

50 items strategies questionnaire of learning listening taken from Oxford strategy taxonomy.

Methodology of research :

The current study applied descriptive and causal –comparative designs. The former design was to find the answer for questions 1 and 2 on the frequency use of the strategies and the inter-correlation among strategy category.

Discussion :

In terms of correlation, the statistical result shows that some of the strategies employed correlate significantly but some of them do not correlate each other. This reveals that six correlation coefficients correlate positively and significantly at .01 level (2-tailed) and one correlation coefficient does not correlate significantly at .05 level. In other side, some coefficients correlate significantly and positively for some strategies deployment. This positive correlation means that the increase frequency of use of certain strategy tend to influence to an increase use of other strategies of learning listening skill.  The finding also shows that there is no significant difference in the use of learning strategy in learning listening skill by less successful learners accounted for higher mean than the successful learners. This finding implies that successful learners deploy the strategies in learning listening not significantly different from the less successful learners.

Conclusion

The present study revealed with the findings on the intensity of strategies use, the correlation among the use and the significant difference between successful and less successful learners. The first result on the investigation of the intensity indicated that the overall strategies employment were at moderate level. The compensation strategies were most intensively used, in opposite, the social strategies were least intensively taken by the students. Then the finding on the interrelationship among the strategies deployment indicated that some of the strategies had significant and positive correlation and some of them were not correlated. Meanwhile, the statistical result on the difference of the strategies showed that the strategies use was not significantly different between high achievers and low achievers. Both groups confirmed the use of cognitive strategies at highest mean difference, and social strategies were at the lowest mean difference. In relation to some previous studies, the overall use of learning strategies confirms the same result. It implies that the strategies provide positive effect on the students listening comprehension and proficiency although both groups of learners performed similar result on strategy attainment.

The advantages of research in this journal

The strategies provide positive effect on the students listening comprehension and proficiency although both groups of learners performed similar result on strategy attainment.

Disadvantages of research in this journal

There has been no implementation of strategies such as social strategies that ultimately contribute to the development of listening skills.

The subject of research :

students from the English Education Study Program of Faculty of Arts and Education in Universitas Teknokrat Indonesia.

The assesment data :

Descriptive qualitative, questionnaires and interviews

Methodology of research :

In this study, a descriptive qualitative method was employed. This research was done through questionnaires and interviews. In the questionnaire, researchers provided 5 questions to students that were distributed to the participants to collect their perspective data. After the researchers distributed the questionnaire, the researchers also continued with an interview.

Discussion :

The questionnaire consisted of two types of questions. There were yes-no questions and scale questions.

The first question is "Do you like watching English movies?". Of 27 people who filled out the questionnaire, 99.3% of them liked watching English movies while 6,7% of them don’t like to watch movies. It showed that almost all of the participants had a positive thought about watching English Movies. The second question is How often do you watch English Movies? By seeing the diagram at this journal, it could be stated that only 4% of the participants were very rare in watching a movie while 44% of them were often watching a movie and 22% of them were frequently watching English movies. Then, it could be concluded that almost all of the participants were often watching English movies. The next question is Do you think watching English movies could help you learn English?. The data showed that all the participants (100%) agreed that while watching English movies, they could also learn English. This proof that by watching movies, students could gain new knowledge about the English Language. The fourth question is “Do you think watching English Movies could increase your vocabulary?. The result was the same as the previous question that all participants agreed by watching English Movies they could gain new vocabulary. This data showed that through watching English movies, students learned new words that they did not learn in school/college. The last question for the yes/no question is "Do you think watching English Movie Improve your listening ability?". As stated before that watching movies also could help students in improving their listening ability, and by listening and watching the movies students will found new English words. The data in this journal showed that 89% of the participants believed that by watching English movies they could improve their listening skills while 11 % of them disagreed with this statement. The result of this research also showed that through watching movies students not only could gain more vocabulary but also could improve other skills like Listening Skills.

Conclusion

From all data above, researchers concluded that watching English Movies could help students in learning English. This could happen because in watching movies students often hearing new words that they might never hear before. They could also guess the meaning through the sentence, expression, and scene in the movies. The participants also said that the more they watched English movies, the more they got influence by the English Movies. The influence here is the way the actors or actresses speak and use them in sentences. Watching English movies also made the students accustomed to the English language. They also have added some vocabularies to their memory through listening and watching English Movies.

The advantages of research in this journal

The advantage of this journal is that it uses a qualitative descriptive research method, namely questionnaires and interviews. Here, it is very visible that the participation of the subject under study on whether watching a favorite movie can improve students' English vocabulary skills. Here it is clearly seen through the diagrammatic photos of the results of the research which show that the participants agreed to the questions posed by the author. In my opinion, the structure of this journal is complete, from the purpose to the conclusion the author presents it very neatly. This makes it easy for readers to understand the contents of this journal.

Disadvantages of research in this journal

The shortcomings encountered by the authors The title does not state for what school level this research was carried out.
