The aim of research :

The aim of this research is to identifying the intensity of strategies use in learning listening, investigating the inter-correlation among the strategies deployment, and describing how significantly successful and less successful learners differ in the use of strategies.

The subject of research :

Two hundred and fifty seven students at seventh and eighth grade of junior high school in Malang.

The assesment data :

50 items strategies questionnaire of learning listening taken from Oxford strategy taxonomy.

Methodology of research :

The current study applied descriptive and causal –comparative designs. The former design was to find the answer for questions 1 and 2 on the frequency use of the strategies and the inter-correlation among strategy category.

Discussion :

In terms of correlation, the statistical result shows that some of the strategies employed correlate significantly but some of them do not correlate each other. This reveals that six correlation coefficients correlate positively and significantly at .01 level (2-tailed) and one correlation coefficient does not correlate significantly at .05 level. In other side, some coefficients correlate significantly and positively for some strategies deployment. This positive correlation means that the increase frequency of use of certain strategy tend to influence to an increase use of other strategies of learning listening skill.  The finding also shows that there is no significant difference in the use of learning strategy in learning listening skill by less successful learners accounted for higher mean than the successful learners. This finding implies that successful learners deploy the strategies in learning listening not significantly different from the less successful learners.

Conclusion

The present study revealed with the findings on the intensity of strategies use, the correlation among the use and the significant difference between successful and less successful learners. The first result on the investigation of the intensity indicated that the overall strategies employment were at moderate level. The compensation strategies were most intensively used, in opposite, the social strategies were least intensively taken by the students. Then the finding on the interrelationship among the strategies deployment indicated that some of the strategies had significant and positive correlation and some of them were not correlated. Meanwhile, the statistical result on the difference of the strategies showed that the strategies use was not significantly different between high achievers and low achievers. Both groups confirmed the use of cognitive strategies at highest mean difference, and social strategies were at the lowest mean difference. In relation to some previous studies, the overall use of learning strategies confirms the same result. It implies that the strategies provide positive effect on the students listening comprehension and proficiency although both groups of learners performed similar result on strategy attainment.

The advantages of research in this journal

The strategies provide positive effect on the students listening comprehension and proficiency although both groups of learners performed similar result on strategy attainment.

Disadvantages of research in this journal

There has been no implementation of strategies such as social strategies that ultimately contribute to the development of listening skills.

The aim of research :

The aim of this research is to know is watching students' favorite movie can increase student skill of English vocabulary.

The subject of research :

students from the English Education Study Program of Faculty of Arts and Education in Universitas Teknokrat Indonesia.

The assesment data :

Descriptive qualitative, questionnaires and interviews

Methodology of research :

In this study, a descriptive qualitative method was employed. This research was done through questionnaires and interviews. In the questionnaire, researchers provided 5 questions to students that were distributed to the participants to collect their perspective data. After the researchers distributed the questionnaire, the researchers also continued with an interview.

Discussion :

The questionnaire consisted of two types of questions. There were yes-no questions and scale questions.

The first question is "Do you like watching English movies?". Of 27 people who filled out the questionnaire, 99.3% of them liked watching English movies while 6,7% of them don’t like to watch movies. It showed that almost all of the participants had a positive thought about watching English Movies. The second question is How often do you watch English Movies? By seeing the diagram at this journal, it could be stated that only 4% of the participants were very rare in watching a movie while 44% of them were often watching a movie and 22% of them were frequently watching English movies. Then, it could be concluded that almost all of the participants were often watching English movies. The next question is Do you think watching English movies could help you learn English?. The data showed that all the participants (100%) agreed that while watching English movies, they could also learn English. This proof that by watching movies, students could gain new knowledge about the English Language. The fourth question is “Do you think watching English Movies could increase your vocabulary?. The result was the same as the previous question that all participants agreed by watching English Movies they could gain new vocabulary. This data showed that through watching English movies, students learned new words that they did not learn in school/college. The last question for the yes/no question is "Do you think watching English Movie Improve your listening ability?". As stated before that watching movies also could help students in improving their listening ability, and by listening and watching the movies students will found new English words. The data in this journal showed that 89% of the participants believed that by watching English movies they could improve their listening skills while 11 % of them disagreed with this statement. The result of this research also showed that through watching movies students not only could gain more vocabulary but also could improve other skills like Listening Skills.

Conclusion

From all data above, researchers concluded that watching English Movies could help students in learning English. This could happen because in watching movies students often hearing new words that they might never hear before. They could also guess the meaning through the sentence, expression, and scene in the movies. The participants also said that the more they watched English movies, the more they got influence by the English Movies. The influence here is the way the actors or actresses speak and use them in sentences. Watching English movies also made the students accustomed to the English language. They also have added some vocabularies to their memory through listening and watching English Movies.

The advantages of research in this journal

The advantage of this journal is that it uses a qualitative descriptive research method, namely questionnaires and interviews. Here, it is very visible that the participation of the subject under study on whether watching a favorite movie can improve students' English vocabulary skills. Here it is clearly seen through the diagrammatic photos of the results of the research which show that the participants agreed to the questions posed by the author. In my opinion, the structure of this journal is complete, from the purpose to the conclusion the author presents it very neatly. This makes it easy for readers to understand the contents of this journal.

Disadvantages of research in this journal

The aim of research :

The goal of this study is a textual and interpretative nature with emerging themes and issues related to the attitudes towards and actual use of LLSs among the target learners. The findings provide practical implications for practitioners, researchers and educational policy makers alike.

The subject of research :

10 English as a foreign language (EFL), teaching staff, including 3 males and 7 females, were between 26 and 50 years of age and their teaching experience ranged from 2 to 20 years at tertiary level. The sampled students were also chosen to reflect the diversity of backgrounds in terms of gender (3 males, 7 females)

The assesment data :

The interview questions for students focussed on their general attitudes and lived experiences of LLSs.

Methodology of research :

This study utilized the conceptual framework of socio-cultural theory, in that learning is a social process where the development of cognition occurs through the interaction with others in a society and also influenced by the culture where an individual is situated.

Discussion :

attribution of success in learning English to several elements, which is a positive perception. This debunks the myth of the absolute power of every single factor in language learning. This has major implications for the teaching profession, that the improvement of LLS needs to go hand in hand with other important tasks, such as stimulation of interest in learning, strengthening of learning determination, and encouragement of learning efforts on the part of teachers.

Conclusion

the need to move forward in language learning strategies that promote students' ability to find what works for them, to overcome or discard old strategies and be flexible in trying new and unfamiliar strategies. Language teaching then moves beyond language learning and related strategies, motivating students to learn skills and to equip students to develop positive strategies that can be used outside higher education and enhance language development as a lifelong process.

The advantages of research in this journal

The advantages presented by the authors in this journal are can make teachers be open to other strategies that have been proven successful or developed by students themselves. This may include the use of technology and personal interests that encourage a desire to learn and develop language acquisition outside of the classroom. Language teaching then moves beyond language learning and related strategies, motivating students to learn skills and to equip students to develop positive strategies that can be used outside of higher education and enhance language development as a lifelong process.

Disadvantages of research in this journal

The shortcomings encountered by the authors in the research is Language learning strategies, particularly in tertiary environments, have moved beyond rote learning, grammar exercises and primary and secondary school approaches to language development. Language learning strategies and processes at the college level today also depend on many factors such as individual talent, perseverance, hard work, and positive attitudes of teachers and students.

The aim of research :

The goal of this study is to find out how instructors employ the Communicative Language Teaching approach in the English classroom, as well as the strategies and resources they use to help students develop their speaking skills

The subject of research :

focuses mostly on other journals and publications to generate the arguments in this article.

The assesment data :

Document studies are used to assess the strategies in CLT

Methodology of research :

This journal takes the form of a review of documents and literatures, with an evaluation of knowledge as the basis. All articles regarding CLT may be found on the internet. In addition, a review of classroom exercises and speaking material is conducted. Articles and online news provide access to all important linked materials.

Discussion :

The goal of this study is to find out how instructors employ the Communicative Language Teaching approach in the English classroom, as well as the strategies and resources they use to help students develop their speaking skills. This can be seen from the class activities, speaking materials until the strategies that has been implemented in some research. This article takes the form of a review of documents and literatures, with an evaluation of knowledge as the basis. As a result, as a teacher, you may learn from other countries that have successfully implemented and developed CLT in improving students' speaking skills.

Conclusion

According to the author, communicative competence encompasses the following aspects of language knowledge: knowing how to use the language in various situations, knowing how to vary the use of the language according to settings and participants (formal and informal speech), being able to understand various types of texts, and so on. When utilizing communicative activities in the classroom, a difference should be made between fluency and accuracy, with fluency being defined as the natural language usage that occurs when speakers participate in a discussion despite their communicative competence limitations. On the other hand, accuracy refers to the development of accurate examples of language usage.

The advantages of research in this journal

The advantages presented by the authors in this journal are that the findings of this study clearly show that authentic language contexts allow students to practice all the principles they have learned in class; Also, trying to use English on their own will definitely be an example of a native language application they will use when appearing as professionals.

Disadvantages of research in this journal

The shortcomings encountered by the authors in the research on the application of the CLT approach to speaking comprehension are that due to differences in English level, it is sometimes difficult to classify students; one possible solution is to give students a placement test so that they can be grouped homogeneously later. Another problem with large groups is that it is difficult for teachers to track their students' progress in communicative exercises.

ABSTRACT

During the pandemic (Covid-19), as it is today, there have been many changes in the policy system, one of which is in the field of education.  The government has adopted a home study policy for the past six months, and it is not certain when face-to-face learning will start.  But this does not hinder student and student learning.  Because in today's era there are applications that make it easier for us to study at home.  One that will be discussed this time is about learning English.  When we learn English, there are four things we will do, namely listening, speaking, reading, and writing.  These four things are the basic skills in improving our English skills.  The right strategy for us in improving our English skills is also very much needed, namely by using the duolingo application.

KEYWORDS

Learn English, study at home, study strategies

INTRODUCTION

Mastering English in the current era is important for all people, because having good English skills can support a higher quality future.  Because many companies require their workers to have good English skills.  Now, English education students must be familiar with the terms listening, reading, speaking, or writing.

DISCUSSION

There are many ways that make it easier for us to be able to learn English even though there is no teacher / lecturer who directly guides us.  So here will be discussed about smart applications that can be used anywhere and anytime for us to learn English.  Here I will discuss an application that is believed to be able to improve our English skills, especially during a pandemic like today.  Duolingo online language learning course application.  In this application, there are many languages to choose from, but this time I only discuss learning English with duolingo.  Duolingo is trusted by several students to improve our English skills.  Duolingo itself provides various facilities, such as vocabulary with various kinds of vocabulary which are presented neatly in the form of sentences and images which make this application even more interesting.  In addition, there are also practice phrases every day that can make us understand more correct grammar in English.  Then listening, listening is one of the important things in learning English.  In this duolingo application provides listening and speaking exercises.  There we are directed to listen to what the speaker is talking about, then we choose the answers we hear.  In contrast to speaking, duolingo provides speaking facilities in such a way, which directs us to speak English, and provides correct corrections whether the words we speak are correct or not.  The duolingo application is provided with a unique method, namely with the concept of learning while playing, because this application is made like we are playing a game, provided images and vocabulary repeatedly, then every day we will get a notification reminder to learn English for at least 5 minutes  in a day.

The benefits that can be obtained by using this duolingo application are:

1. English vocabulary increases

2. The ability to speak English improves

3. Getting co-stars to practice together every day as if we were taking a course.  Therefore, many students believe that this Duolingo application is effective for improving their English learning skills.

RESEARCH METHODS

Here I use a research method with the google form feature, I make some questions to survey 21 of my classmates about what applications make it easier for them to learn English during the current pandemic.  And it turns out that the most revenue is focused on the Duolingo application.  From 21 people, 23.8% of them chose duolingo.  Meanwhile, 4.1% were focused on the Youtube application, lingodeer, film streaming application, qanda and google translate.  And 4,8% was obtained in the cake application.  So based on my research through google form it is stated that duolingo is an application that can make it easier for them to learn English during a pandemic.

CONCLUSION

based on research it can be said that this Duolingo application makes it very easy for students to learn English.  This application is also very useful because the concept of this media is learning while playing.  This makes us not get bored or bored while studying.  The question sheets in the accuracy of determining vocabulary or grammar on filling in the fill in the blank make it easier for us to understand the material presented and easier to answer the questions given.  So it can be concluded that the use of the duolingo application can help students understand difficult learning materials found in English subjects, especially listening skills on the aspects of ability and accuracy.
